Not true, petrified wood is very rare, When there is good cell pattern and it is highly agatized, rounds burls knots, limbs. Though finding wood on a delta bar buried in sand would be very nice.
As most wood is formed in ash flows or mud slides. The west U.S. has some of the best agatized wood in the world.
Good wood well be 6.8 - 6.9 on the MOH Scale, And will have good cell pattern and it will not soak up water when wet.
It well have a shine to it when angled to the white light.
As for the worlds supplies of fossil wood it is huge.
Though Gem grade & Cabbing grades are very rare.
