All British Sovereigns are made from 22 carat (91.67%) gold and have been since 1817.

Early Sovereigns were made from gold of varying purity.

It is possible that you have a sterling silver Crown (Five Shillings) from the same year. The reverse design is almost identical but the Crown is much larger than the Sovereign at 38.6 mm in diameter.

A British 1885 gold Sovereign (Victoria)(Crown and Shield - large head)(minted in Melbourne - mintmark = M below wreath), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £1,000 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from bullion value to £225 GBP.

A British 1885 gold Sovereign (Victoria)(Crown and Shield - large head)(minted in Sydney - mintmark = S below wreath), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £950 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from bullion value to £225 GBP.

A British 1885 gold Sovereign (Victoria)(St.George - horse with short tail)(minted in London - no mintmark), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £350 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from bullion value to £200 GBP.

A British 1885 gold Sovereign (Victoria)(St.George - horse with short tail)(minted in Melbourne - mintmark = M), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £800 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from bullion value to £185 GBP.

A British 1885 gold Sovereign (Victoria)(St.George - horse with short tail)(minted in Sydney - mintmark = S), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to £800 GBP. If it has been circulated but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from bullion value to £195 GBP.

NOTE - The reverse of these coins is upside down to the obverse. This is normal.

The values quoted are the best possible for the best specimens in their grades, but may be significantly lower due to varying demand for the coin and the prevailing economic climate. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

All British Sovereign coinage is minted in 22 carat gold.

Modified coins have no collector value.

If for some inexplicable and bizarre reason somebody has silver plated a gold coin, the coin has only whatever the current bullion value of gold is.

Such a coin does not exist.

All Sovereigns are made from 22 carat gold, weigh 7.9881 grams and are 22.05mm in diameter.

You may be confused with the very similar looking, but much larger sterling silver Crown coin which weighs 28.35 grams and is 38.6mm in diameter.

Since 1817, Sovereigns have been made from 22 carat gold.

I cannot imagine why anybody would silver plate a gold coin, so you may have a replica in silver. Value unknown.
