It's only 40% silver, not all silver. In fact, no circulating U.S. coin has ever been made of pure silver because the metal is too soft to stand up to circulation wear. Pre-1964 coins silver were made with 10% added copper to harden them against wear.
Half-dollars dated 1965 through 1969 are worth about $2.75 at the current price of silver. Those dated 1971 and later are made of copper-nickel and are only worth face value.
