Copper scrap metal prices vary on a daily basis and also depends on the type of copper scrap (wire, prepared, etc.).

As of May 28, 2009: #1 Heavy Scrap Copper is around $1.70 - $1.80 a pound , #1 Bare Copper Wire is upwards of $1.90 per pound, large electric motors are 20 - 40 cents per lb.

As of December 3, 2010: the price of copper has been going from $2.90 a LB. to $3.00 a LB.

As of June 29 2011 - copper hit a price of $4.21 per pound. Scrap dealers may pay $3.90+ for scrap copper based on that spot market price above. There are many sites online that publish current copper scrap prices and it is suggested you check these often in order to make sure you are getting proper price at the recycling yard.

Copper prices are based upon the LME, Comex and spot market prices which are readily published each day. Copper scrap prices are also baed upon these markets but pay less due to grade of copper and market maker commissions. Currently, for clean copper scrap, recycling yards are paying $3.90+ per pound
