How expensive is it to change from chlorine to salt in your pool?

Currently at Leslies pool supplies you can purchase a Hayward goldline salt system for 1179. That includes a Salt cell and controller panel. You would also need salt to turn the pool into salt water. Salt is 8.99 for 40lbs and around 500 lbs will be needed depending on the size of the pool. Installation runs about $169. I have seen these systems go on sale for 879.

∙ 14y agoIt doesn't cost any thing. You don't even have to change the water, Just turn the chlorinator of and start adding chlorine like you do in an ordinary pool. The only difference between a salt water pol and a chlorine pool is that a salt water pool uses a chlorinator to make its own chlorine. a fresh water pool has the chlorine added.

∙ 13y agoIt is not a fortune....but i think you're better off w/ clorine. Salt water tastes BAD too! But if you really want to go for it, i'd say it's not a whole lot of money-depending on your status. Anyways, good luck!

∙ 12y agoit depends if your doing it yourself or your having it installed for you. i found one made by jandy that is made to be installed by the homeowner. it took about an hour total to install and so far it's working properly. i needed to add an outlet so my cost was around 850.00 if you have a spare outlet then it would be the cost of the unit and your time. if you search around they go for 799.00 to 999.00 . to have it installed i was getting quotes in the range of 1500.00 to 2000.00 that was for my pool 16x40 the price varies a depending on the size of the pool and which equipment you choose. if your going the do it yourself route be careful .some companies advertise the cell separately so get the total cost of the complete system when comparing. hope this was helpful!

∙ 11y agoI got a salt water chlorinator from Canadian Tire. Missed the sale so it was around $300 last year. Put it in line after the filter and before the return. Add the water and stabilize the Ph. Then get the chlorine set up with pool shock. Wait a day for everything to stabilize while filtering. Add the required salt for the pool volume (volume calculators online), let it circulate for a day or two then turn on the chlorinator. That's it. It did the rest. Never had to add salt, or any Ph altering chemicals. Best of all... never had to mess with chlorine! I'm starting year two and it's working as advertised.

A Salt water pool is a chlorine pool. The difference is that in the case of a saltwater pool there is a chlorinater fited inline that converts the salt into chlorine automaticaly, Meaning that you don't have to purchace any chlorine to keep up chlorine levels.

However if you don't have a salt water chlorinator and prefer the feeling of a salt water pool then there is no reason not to add salt to the pool as well as keeping up the chlorine yourself.

A salt system IS a chlorine system. Chlorine is still the sanitizer. The salt system is there so a chlorine generator can make the chlorine from the salt instead of you having to deal with it. There is no such thing as "best", only tradeoffs. A salt system is expensive even if you break it down per year (with initial and replacement costs). However much less maintenance. A salt system IS perfectly safe for a vinyl, or any type, pool.

If you have a normal chlorine pool and you want to convet to a salt water pool all you have to do is get a conversion kit which involves fiting a salt water indoctrinator along the the line fitting the electronics and puting salt in the pool. you dont have to do anything to the water in the pool other then put the salt in it.It is not a difficult job and does not require you to change your filtration system. The whole jog can be done in about 2 housr if everything is easily accessible.

The chlorine generator electronically separates chlorine gas out of the salt water which then dissolves into the water automatically maintaining chlorine levels. The adidion of salt to the water makes it more pleasant to swim in and you are spared having to handle and store chlorine at home. but the problem is you are still swimming in Chlorine and now you are also swimming in sodium.

No A salt water pool is in fact also chlorine pool, the difference being that with a salt water pool a salt water chlorinator converts the salt that is in the water into chlorine gas which is then dissolved into the water while the filter is running. the conversion wont have any adverse effects on the pool.
