Realistically, for as long as she wants. In silence in the libray her diary is FULL!! we have only seen about 5 or so of those adventures so basically river can come back whenever Alex Kingston and Steven Moffat choose to bring back river. thats the amazing thing about her, shes dead but she can always return because now whenever we see her she will be younger than what she was in silence in the libray. so to answer your question, she will never be "killed" off or leave, she can always, ALWAYS, come back. however of course there will be a point in time where Alex Kingston either decides she cant do all the amazing stuff she does as river, or every single part of rivers life has been explored (would take a spin off series or many many years) ------------------ River is getting younger and Alex is getting older. At some point, that will be a problem, won't it?-------------------------- Alex's Age is going to be a problem but rivers wont. i think that rivers timelines not just backwards, but all mixed up as well. for example she is older in the Day of the moon, but younger in Good man goes to war. so her timeline is all muddled up. but yes Alex's age will become a problem, rivers wont though.
Additional: however, the mini-episode "Last Night", included with the Series 6 DVD release establishes that River's final meeting with the Doctor before she goes to the Library to die will be with the Eleventh Doctor, so that makes it unlikely the character will appear again after the Doctor next regenerates.

As for why it looks different, every time the sonic screwdriver is destroyed irreparably, the TARDIS presents him with a new one and sometimes the design changes. Improvement: I might know what you mean. River's screwdriver does look quite similar to the Tenth Doctor's blue one, as apposed to the Eleventh Doctor's green one. Which is a strange thing really, but I suppose that the future Doctor would have purposefully given River one that looked like the Tenth Doctor's, so it would make sense to the Tenth Doctor.
