Most firefighters in the USA are volunteers, meaning they make NOTHING. Some are on-call, when needed, and they may be paid minimum wage for the hours they work. Salaries for "career" firefighters vary widely, depending upon how large the department is and how much training and experience the individual has.

- According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the estimated mean annual wage for fire fighters as of May 2008 is $45,700. This would amount to $21.97 an hour.

- In the UK, after 2 years probabtion about £32,000

-In big cites you can expect a starting salary around 40k and tenure at 65k but some go higher. example- tenure plus over time in Providence, Rhode Island could have you earning up to 90k, vs. a state fire fighter in Florida, who puts out brush fires and may make 27k a year or less.

- Keep in mind big cites have benifets as good as you would get with a federal job. not to mention you will most likely get 10 sick days and 2 weeks of vacation to start off, plus a 4 day on 4 day off rotation.

Also take into account that pay scales vary by state. Also take into account that 87% of American firefighters are volunteers and do not get paid anything except their training and gear. They have exactly the same training as a paid firefighter. So with that equation the average firefighter's pay cannot be figured.

- Wildfire fighters in Ore. make 15.00 an hour.

- Different countries have different pay rates, dependent on full time or part time or volunteer contract, and different rates of specialist pay. The scale shown above may not be representative. Your local government/council/mayors office site might list pay rates. Also involved in how much they are paid is their training, for example: a Paramedic will make more than an EMT, or an Engineer more than a basic Firefighter.

- Pay rates will change by location. A Fireman in Chicago is most likely going to get more pay than a Fireman in say Jackson, Mississippi. Then again the cost of living is different also.

Most firefighters in the USA are volunteers (get paid nothing) or are on call companies and get paid minimum wage if they show up for a call.
