This will depend on the country, and the type of contract.

Some nurses have a full time job, committed to one ward/clinic, and are paid a salary (per annum).

However, other nurses choose to only work bank shifts, which pay significantly more.

Night shifts & weekends as bank pay more than weekday day shifts.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the estimated mean annual wage for registered nurses as of May 2008 is, $65,130. This would amount to $31.31 per hour. Median annual wages of registered nurses were $62,450 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $51,640 and $76,570. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $43,410, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $92,240.

Registered Nurses typically earn about $15-20/hour on average. Opportunities for overtime and shift differential exist in many areas of the country (U.S.) that allow RNs to earn an average of $45-50K/year. While it is not among the highest paid careers in the medical profession, it does offer other rewards in the form of job security, placement, advancement, and personal reward.

Now the demand for health care practitioners has been increased commensurately. Only some years ago, nurses were taken for granted, overworked and underpaid. But now registered nurses are some of the most in-demand and highly paid professionals in the field of medical and their salaries for registered nurses in 2006 ranged from $47,710 to $69,850.
My wife is a Registered Nurse and now after 20 years of work she has a monthly salary of 27 500 SEK which is about 3 700 USD (then of course the Swedish taxes take over one third...)
It depends on the hospital and they area she is assigned. The country is also a factor. :)
