Nobel Peace Prize Winner

A large monetary award is included with the Nobel Prizes, along with a Diploma.

Oh yeah... there's also the gratuitous praise and prestige.

Currently about 10 million Swedish Kronor (slightly more than one million Euros or US dollars is awarded to the winner).

Nobel peace prize winners and recent cash awards:

  • In 2007 the cash award was 1.5 million dollars.

  • In 2005 Mohamed El Bareidi received 1.3 million dollars

The Nobel Prize amount is set by the Swedish kronor (SEK), 10 million per full Nobel Prize. (That's around one & a half million US dollars.)

Each Nobel Prize consists of a gold medal, a diploma bearing a citation, and a sum of money, the amount of which depends on the income of the Nobel Foundation.

A sum of $1,300,000 accompanied each prize in 2005 and has increased each year to the current amount- 1.4 million US dollars in 2009.)

A Nobel Prize is either given entirely to one person, divided equally between two persons, or is shared by three persons. In the latter cases, two together can receive a one-half share or each of the three persons can receive a one-third share of the prize.

Two prizes can be awarded in the same field i.e. if the prize was withheld from the previous year (due to a refusal to accept the award,or a governments refusing to allow their citizens to accept an award) then the current year's prize and last year's prize can be awarded in the same year.

Those who win a prize, whether they accept it or not, are nevertheless entered into the list of Nobel laureates with the remark "declined the prize."

In the latter case, each of the three persons can receive a one-third share of the prize or two together can receive a one-half share. Sometimes a prize is withheld until the following year; if not then awarded it is paid back into the funds, which happens also when a prize is neither awarded nor reserved. Two prizes in the same field-i.e., the prize withheld from the previous year and the current year's prize-can thus be awarded in one year. If a prize is declined or not accepted before a set date, the prize money goes back into the funds. Some prizes have been declined by their winners, and in certain instances governments have refused to allow their citizens to accept them. Those who win a prize are nevertheless entered into the list of Nobel laureates with the remark "declined the prize." Motives for nonacceptance may vary, but most often the reason has been external pressure; for example, in 1937 Adolf Hitler forbade Germans in the future from accepting Nobel Prizes because he had been infuriated by the award of the 1935 Peace Prize to the anti-Nazi journalist Carl von Ossietzky, who at the time was a political prisoner in Germany. In some cases, the refuser later explained the real reason behind the refusal and was granted the Nobel gold medal and the diploma-but not the money, which invariably reverts to the funds after a certain period of time.

You get approximately 1.3 million US dollars. The Nobel Prize is a wealth itself though. By itself, it is made of 18-karat green gold. It is plated with 24-karat gold and cast by the Swedish mint.

The Nobel Prize monetary award varies each year, but in recent years it has been about 10 million Swedish krona (approximately $1.1 million USD) per prize. This amount is typically shared if the prize is awarded to more than one recipient.

The Nobel Prizes for 2012, including the Peace prize, were set at 8 Million Swedish Kroner, which was 12 million US Dollars at that time. Of course, the monetary amount is secondary to the prestige and publicity a Nobel prize gives the recipient and their causes.
