It depends on the state law..in my state(Nebraska)its 7.5%..i guess.so,suppose the price of gas is 3 dollars then tax per gallon is approx( 0.225 dollars)..if u calculate in big ratio then the government makes hell lot of money but still our country is in debt.

The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents on unleaded and 24.4 cents on diesel. The US consumes, roughly, about 20 million barrels of oil a day, or 400 million gallons of gasoline. Assuming all this gas is bought "at the pump" and for simplicity is all unleaded, that equates to $26,864,000,000. ( I think)
