Most places pay differently, but none pay enough. Those below me quoting 13 to 16 per hour are not considering vehicle costs that significantly lower that wage to well below federal min. and is the reason for the lawsuit against all major Pizza chains (Domino's, Papa John's, Pizza Hut). It is an impossible answer to give as to how much a pizza delivery person makes as it depends on many factors over time but can be roughly amounted to 15 per hour - $19k in expenses per year which roughly = $5.86 per hour after expenses assuming full-time work. consider this also when tipping your driver "According the AAA average cost is 56 cents a mile for the year 2004" if you live 3 miles away from the pizza place and tip $2 your driver is barely breaking even (.56 x 6 =$3.36 cost - 2.00 tip + 1.10 from store =$3.10 net result delivery guy lost $.26 delivering your food) Answer I work as pizza delivery driver and we get 6.55 p/h plus 1.10 for the first run we take each time we leave the store , . 50 cents for the second and nothing for any run past that so say we leave with three runs we get 1.10 for the 1st .50 for the second and 0 for the third. We depend greatly on tips and when a person tips well we go out of the way next time to get the food there on time and maybe with a little something extra so tip your driver so on a good night I make about $14.00 pH

the average pizza delivery person makes between $ So on a goo11 to $14 an hour that is with their hourly pay

The base hourly wage for a pizza delivery driver is minimum wage, which in most states, is $5.15/hour. This wage pays the driver for work he/she performs in the store when there are no deliveries. The driver then receives between .80 cents or $1.00 for each delivery they take out. This pays for gas mileage for the delivery. The driver then relies on tips to pay for the rest of gas or wear and tear on the car. Therefore, if you were to take 2 deliveries in an hour, which is average in most towns, you would make 5.15 + 2.00 for 2 deliveries, and hopefully, each delivery would tip $2.00 each, that would be 11.15 per hour. Now keep in mind, many people do not think a delivery driver needs a tip because they assume they are already making $15.00 per hour. This is not true. If drivers did not receive tips, they would essentially only make about 7.50 an hour, and be responsible for their own gas and wear and tear on their cars. That is what usually happens and that is why the turnover of delivery drivers in the pizza delivery industry is usually so high. I just felt this question needed a bit more detailed answer.

________Income variables

If the restaurant is of higher quality, well-established and/or offers more than just pizza(Grinders, pasta dinners, calzones, etc) the driver can make significantly more. ($13-$20/hr) If a driver delivers 4 orders per hour, the restaurant compensates them $0.50 per delivery, and they are tipped a minimum of 1.50 per delivery, they would make at least $13/hr.

5$/hr+(0.50x4)+(1.50x4)=$13

The selection of food that the customer can choose from gives them variation in their meals, increasing regular orders, and provides such a variety that everyone in a given household can find something that they want.

The location of the restaurant also increases orders and subsequently, income. A restaurant located in a densely populated middle-class neighborhood, outside of the city with a mix of single family houses and freestanding apartment buildings(duplexes, triple-decker, etc) is ideal for many drivers. These neighborhoods are more common in the North East. This particular area would allow access to more customers without having the driver travel very far. It also provides a customer base that can afford to tip at least $1.50 per order.

Conversely, restaurants with a limited menu, in a rural neighborhood, or those newly established can negatively affect some drivers. With increasing costs of fuel, $.50-$1.00 delivery charges may not be significant enough to compensate fuel costs forcing the driver to rely on larger tips to pay for gas. The lower population density decreases the customer base and, therefore, the number of deliveries. Drivers may receive larger tips, but the infrequency in deliveries in addition to the time consumed in delivering may nullify the added income.

The day of the week as well as the time of day that the driver works also can affect his/her income. Many restaurants will only offer delivery during the late afternoon and night time. If a restaurant does offer delivery during all hours of operation, the morning-afternoon shift usually consists of just one driver. The evening and night shift can consist of as many as seven drivers depending on the day and the volume that a particular restaurant.

Sunday through Thursday are usually slow and consist of 1-2 drivers. Friday and Saturday are usually the busiest, with night shifts being the busiest. On these nights, especially if shorthanded and busy, drivers can make $20/hr or more in the ideal location mentioned above

I can agree and disagree with many of the things said here. I have been a pizza driver on and off for more than 15 years. I have worked for as low as $3.50 per hour and as much as $8.00 per hour just for my hourly pay. This all depends on the restaurant owner and how much he/she values their quality of service. I live in Michigan and nobody enforces any minimum hourly rates for drivers. I've also worked for as little as $.75 per delivery up to $1.50. Some places will give the driver a percentage of the total amount of product delivered, usually around 6%. In my opinion, a decent pizzeria will have enough deliveries so that each driver can take 15-20 deliveries in a 7-hour shift. Depending on the day, this could be more. If I can't take 20 per night it is not worth my time.

I was offered a job a week ago for $4/hour plus $2/run. Not great but I need extra cash. The guy called me the next day and tried to say he could only pay $3.50/hour. I told him to shove it.

As far as variety of food, this only helps with the amount of business a place can bring in by reaching out to more customers. In turn, creating more deliveries. Pick up specials are killing drivers because of the huge difference in price compared to getting it delivered.

DELIVERY CHARGE: also killing drivers. It is labeled delivery charge on the bill and can be as much as $3.00 but the driver still only receives on average $1.00. Most customers believe this is all going to the driver so they don't tip or don't tip as much.

So every night you go out it's like a shot in the dark.....you never know what will happen.

One equation I find works best for me, considering I drive a Honda civic that gets great gas mileage, is take the number of deliveries and multiply by $2.50 and that is your earnings for the night. Then add your hourly rate and divide by your hours worked.

Good luck, pizza owners everywhere are burning bridges with good drivers every day.

I've worked pizza in 3 different states and the #1 factor is store volume and the number of drivers they employ to handle it. The reason, as stated above, is you get about $2.50-3.50 per delivery, which includes the $.50-1.00 you get per run. This accounts for a "stiff" rate of 15-20%, which is not unusual. Deliver in the wrong area and it can easily hit 50% or more stiffs.

Now, since we have the average store payout and the average tip combining for around $3.00 per delivery, the driver's entire take for the night is dependent on quantity of delivery. Pizza, generally, operates on a daily cycle. The VAST majority of deliveries come between 4pm and 7pm. If you don't work those hours, you can at least half your number of deliveries. It's not unusual for the morning driver to do less than a single delivery per hour AND most are single stop runs, so they have higher fuel/maintenance deduction. Most national chains, in the name of customer service, carry more drivers than necessary and you'll average 12-15 runs. If you get into one where the manager is min/maxing his staff, you'll get 18-21. If you hit pay dirt, and get a high volume store where the manager is willing to sacrifice his "on time", you can start pushing 30 deliveries. I've worked for every major player in different parts of the country, and most managers of franchise stores fall into the first group, so you have to consider that when looking for an average. We'll take 18 deliveries as our average and you come up with the very realistic number of $54 per night, minus $10 in gas and you're looking at about $5.50 on top of whatever hourly wage you make (probably $5-7 an hour). That makes the simple answer $10-12 an hour. This number is now lowered by maintenance costs on your car. Oil changes, tires, batteries, starters, timing belts, misc fluids, brakes, wipers, various lights, transmission maintenance, increased insurance rates, etc.

Bottom Line: $10 an hour for an upper average store if we calculate $1 an hour for car maintenance. Anyone who throws bigger numbers out is likely lying, or not factoring in the costs to operate their vehicle. Point of reference, I worked for a national chain for HUGE events like Spring Break and Bike Week. During these events, stores make $10,000 per night. The average "successful" pizza shop makes $10,000 per week. I averaged about $17 an hour during those events, so you can take that as the top end in an "ideal" situation. Also, don't forget this job comes with no benefits, and it's the 10th most dangerous job in the United States.

Most places don't really pay much to the workers because half of the payment is to the worker and the other half to the manager
