They don't "pay you" anything. You have to pay a lot to live in Alaska for many reasons due to the distance from commerce sources, isolation, climate, and availability of urbanized areas. Alaskan's get the dividend, but that hardly makes up for the elevated cost of living.

each family is paid about 1000 a year but you first have to establish a two year residency and it is oil dividends that are paid to the families.
