The amount you give all depends on several variables.

  • How much good you believe the fund will do for its beneficiaries
  • How much extra money you have to donate
  • How much sympathy you have for the beneficiaries
  • How much the beneficiaries need the memorial fund in order to continue with their lives

And so forth.

It's usually a good idea to give anonymously, especially if you believe that there will be peer pressure for you to give according to 'what everyone else gives'.

Whatever you give is best given from your heart.

You should evaluate your financial circumstances and give accordingly. There is no set amount to give to a memorial fund; you can give as little or as much as you wish. Note: Donations to non-profits given from Jan 1 to Dec 31st are tax deductible in the following year.

Some ideas to "memorialize" a deceased person include (in no particular order):

  • Buy a book through the library "In the name of....". The library will glue a memorial paper to the inside first page or front cover. Cost: Between $18.00 and 50.00 or more depending on the book.
  • Give to a "cause" that the person valued.
  • Give to a "cause" that you value, in the deceased person's name.
  • Support a local charity.
  • Establish a scholarship fund.
  • Donate to the hospital's "Foundation" fund
  • Donate to the person's church

Depends on who it is. If it's a close friend $50 if immediate family member $100. Also depends on what you can afford! You do not generally give money at a Westernized funeral. You may send flowers with a sympathy card to the home of the deceased's family; flowers to the church and they are sent to the burial site after the service or you can do both.

We typically make a contribution equal to about the amount we would have spent for a nice floral arrangement. That can be anywhere from $25 up to $100. from there let your heart and your financial situation guide you. many times the recipient's family is notified simply that "...a generous donation has been sent to _________ (charity, church, etc) by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jones." when we've received those notes, no amounts are generally noted, just that a donation has been made and by whom.

Most will prefer a contribution vs. flowers as the flowers wilt and die in a week, but the donation to a church, cancer foundations, hospice care facilities, etc., go to do real good in the name of the person being remembered.

and don't be afraid to ask the family if they would prefer flowers or a contribution and if it's a contribution, to which organization.

If it's a close friend and they say absolutely nothing, give them a tree to plant in their yard, an evergreen perhaps that they can decorate at the holidays.
