my 2.2L 1999 cavalier takes 3.7 quarts of 5w-30 oil. use castrol at wal-mart stores. look at owners manuel or go to autozone.com.
The 2003-2005 cavaliers have the 2.2 Eco-tec motor which takes 4 and a half to 5 quarts of oil. the Idea was to give it more miles between oil changes but with the new filter they used it really should still be changed every 3,000 miles.
The 2.5 liter is a 4 cylinder engine.
Well yes and no. Both have a 2.2 four cylinder if I'm not mistaken, but I don't think the earlier Cavalier's have the EcoTec motor. And you should be able to get the engine from the '03 into the '97 with no problem.
What's wrong with my 2003 Chevy Cavalier if the check engine lights on and a friends computer said "misfire cylinder 4 "? It studders also. thanks Dawn

The other engine type is the 4G63T, used in the Evolution sub-model. The 4G63T is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4 cylinder engine.
