They make about .14 cents per gallon in gross profit. But if you use a credit card to pay for you fuel that profit drops by 3%. Add in operating expenses and there net profit margin is very small and normally is around .05 cents.
They actually make about 8% profit. So if the wholesale price of gasoline is $3.18 a gallon, they would theoretically make .25 cents. In fact, however, the profit earned specifically from the retail sale of gasoline in much lower, and can be as little as 2 cents per gallon. Keep in mind that state and federal taxes can add another 25-63 cents. Oil companies obviously don't make a profit on the sales tax. Oil companies' overall margin is not high for a major industry since most companies shoot for at least 10% profit. The difference, and the reason they make so much money, is that they sell so much of it. They sell gasoline to not only the US but to many of the oil producing countries that don't have refinery capability.

At four bucks per gallon, the oil companies get 3.50 dollars and the government gets 0.50 dollars. The oil companies have to pay for the upkeep of oil refineries, so they make probably around three dollars profit for each gallon sold. In Europe the oil companies only make a dollar per gallon, it's taxed super heavily.
profit as in Profit is the money left over when all bills are paid.
Zero as you can not make a gallon of gasoline from water.
London Underground does not make a profit, it is given back to the government who own it.
