For an X-ray of a limb, the typical effective dose is 0.001 mSv. This is a comparatively small dose, and often talked about in relation to how much natural radiation from the earth to which it compares. In this case, it is equal to the natural background radiation you would get in less than one day.

In which case the precedure would be as with pretty much any x-ray. Get on the table, have the radiation source above you and the plate below. Get irradiated. Wait while the plate is developed. Listen to the doctor interpret the image.

What problems would you have if you had an x-ray and you were pregnant?
The baby will have a bone disorder. The level of radiation is dangerous because they aren't fully grown. Their brains don't develop fast enough. It does not happen with all x-rays though. It depends on what type of x-ray you get. It also depends on how much radiation the x-ray uses. When you get your x-ray just find out exactly how much radiation is involved. Ask your technician how much it uses, and tell him your pregnant too.
