How much should I pay for professional resume writing services?

In my experience, professional rates for resume writing vary. Agencies charge high prices, independents like me charge moderate prices, college students charge low prices, and internet prices vary widely.

I currently charge $200 as a base fee. Not included are expenses such as phone calls and travel (even to a mutually convenient meeting place). Not included is research that I deem essential. Not included is excessive time spent waiting for feedback from a client. (A certain level of trust and confidence on the part of the client is essential.)

If the client provides all, or almost all, necessary information and explains all terms and/or abbreviations so that I can write a strong resume, the fee is $200. (This means that the client is well-advised to do a fair amount of work before he or she hands the resume project over to me. Strong client preparation is key to success and economy.) I do not charge for any edits or revisions that are necessary because of an error or errors made by me.

It is extremely important that a client understand that having his or her resume "done" by a professional writing service is not the same as bringing one's sweaters to be cleaned by a professional dry-cleaning service. One cannot just drop off and pick up. Some clients are reluctant to promote themselves and need to be coaxed to provide the writer with his or her achievements, accomplishments, and/or awards. Some clients loathe the whole process and want someone else to worry about it although this is unreasonable and undoable unless the client is a close relative or colleague and therefore well-known to the writer. The client must collaborate fully with the writer and be available to the writer as often and as long as possible until the project has been completed satisfactorily. Basic computer skills are important as drafts of a resume and/or bio should be sent back and forth for evaluation and ultimate approval. Faxing, phoning, and snail mail can be expensive, and the latter is time-consuming. Talking by phone about documents, if they are not being examined by both writer and client during the conversation, can invite misunderstandings and mistakes.

There is no easy answer to this question. Decide what level of writing, promotional, and set-up excellence is important to you, and find the professional writer who can meet or exceed your expectations. If at all possible, bring a sample resume offered you by the writer to a respected English professor or copyeditor, and ask him or her to critique it.

You want a resume that, when skimmed for 30 seconds, communicates that you are a stellar job candidate. If you are an executive, you may be asked to pay far more than if you are a salaried employee at a small business or corporation. You can always request a senior discount or special consideration because you have been laid off.

It depends on every writers. If you get a more known writing services it is much pricey.

The cost of hiring someone to provide resume writings services for an executive depends on the services rendered. The more reputable the provider the more costly the service will be.
