I just got a quote on a 1999 Accord: Timing Kit $222.10 (Belt Only $18.10) Water Pump $58.66 Anti Freeze $12.95 Labor $292.50
Total including water pump: $630.00 from Tilden Car Care
Most recommend replacing water pump because it has to be removed to do the timing belt anyway
The water pump doesn't have be removed to do the belt change. Honda recommends to replace water pump at that point for 2 reasons: 1.) the labor cost to replace a bad pump is essentially the same as a timing belt so let's do it while we're in there; and 2.) what a money maker - look at the price - $59 !!!!!!
Don't get sucked into that Honda ripoff. Don't replace the water pump until it needs replaced. If at some time in the future the water pump goes bad, while they are in there, then replace the timing belt again.
Think about how many cases of beer, or steaks, or gallons of gas you can buy with $58.66
Replace the water pump when U have the belt done. As an EX Honda mechanic (22 years ) years this is common sense. I have a 2000 V6 ready for a belt. I will replace the belt, the water pump, crank and camshaft seals as well. I belive in doing a Commplete job. I am also replacing hoses,thermostat and coolant, I want to get im my car and go with No worries. And since I don't have the equipment any more i WILL BE PAYING the labor for this.
