How much should labor cost to replace an engine on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?

[Edit]

Answer

If this is a Quad-4 SOHC or DOHC engine you're looking at 12 to 15 hours at shop labor rate (depending on transaxle type and AC) plus about $2500 for a brand new GM engine and miscellaneous parts. A high quality remanufactured engine is likely to cost slightly more, and a cheaply remanufactured engine a bit less, but you often get what you pay for. If you use a junkyard engine, you are taking a chance on getting a junk engine.

If this is a 2.2L OHV (pushrod type) engine, about 5 to 8 hours labor and a less expensive engine. Also, the 2.2L engine lasts about twice as long (but has less power output.

You MUST use the same engine type that the car was originally equipped with.
