There is no definitive length for how much penetration is required, and in fact entering the penis too far into the vagina can often be painful. However it is much more pleasurable for a woman's clitoris to be gently massaged during intercourse and she is much more likely to reach an orgasm. Also consider going slowly and more passionately (ie. much more caressing) until you think she is reaching her climax, then speed up.
