Without knowing its date, it's not possible to say whether it has any collector's value.

Austria switched to the euro in 2002 so schillings no longer circulate. If it's a common-date coin, its value at the time was slightly more than 10¢ US.

A British Shilling of 1842 was 1/20 of a English Pound or 12 pence. A pound was 240 pennies, 20 shillings or 5 crowns. A gold Sovereign (a Pound) was worth at the time ($4.85 US).

A nick name for a shilling is a "bob"... a pound is a "quid" and that term is still in use.

So, 1/20 of $4.85 = 24.25 cents US.

But, back then (before 1914), coins were "Hard Money" so the coins were basically just pieces of metal with a country placing it's Stamp of Authenticity on it.

Example: The British 1/2 Crown, Crown (5 shillings) and pound don't have any value stamped on them. A 1 pound gold coin was "a pound worth of gold..." and that went for the silver coins from 1830 to 1873 (when the price of silver dropped because of the mountain of silver coming from the Comstock Load- Nevada mines).

English silver coins up to 1919 were 92.5% silver (sterling silver) and a Shilling was a bit smaller than a US Quarter. 50% silver from 1920 to 1946. Then Copper/nickle in 1947 onwards (the World Wars left the government heavily in debt).

in 1840's, A common Irish man earned (in Ireland) about 6 pence a day (1/2 a shilling).

A English factory worker made 2 Shillings a day.

A US Factory worker made about $1.20 a day.. or 5 shillings..... that is why the term "Another day, another dollar" came from.

That is why so many Irish/English came to America.. for the much higher wages.

The Buying power of 25 cents would be about 25x current prices... so about $6.25 in puchases (2 loafs of bread, some milk or a quick fast food meal).
