Burning 1 gallon of gasoline produces 1.52 gallons of water. How this is calculated:

1 gallon of gasoline weights 8.66lbs, of which 1.4 lbs is Hydrogen, as gasoline contains 16% Hydrogen and 84% carbon by weight.

This assumes gasoline has the chemical formula of C8H18, the same as Octane.

Water is 11% Hydrogen and 89% Oxygen by weight. One gallon of water weights 8.35lbs, and contains .92 lbs of Hydrogen, and 7.43 lbs of oxygen.

Therefore since hydrogen burned or in, equals hydrogen out after combustion, therefore 1.4 lbs of hydrogen burned, equals 1.4 lbs of hydrogen in the H20 or water created in combustion. By weight, 1.4 lbs of hydrogen divided by the weight of .92 lbs of hydrogen in water, equals 1.52. So 1.4 lbs of hydrogen in 1 gallon of gasoline, is converted to more gallons of water because gasoline contains more hydrogen per gallon, then does water.

It is generally accepted that one gallon of motor oil polutes 1,000,000 gallons of water. It's not gasoline, but it's closer than nothing! One source of this info is the North Carolina Clean Water Education Partnership. See http://www.nccwep.org/help/did_you_know.php for the citation.

On line people sure are sloppy. Gasoline weight 6.16 lbs at 62 F.Assuming it is 100% octane which is 15.8 % H2 there is .973 lbs of H2. Divide this by .110 the portion of H2 in water by weight you have 8.76 lbs of water or 1.05 gal.

What is the difference in weight between gallon of water and gallon of gasoline?

Equivalent in what way? Gasoline and water are two entirely different chemical compounds. They have dissimilar physical and chemical properties because, well, they are different. Perhaps you are referring specifically to the weight of a gallon of each. If so, then the weight of a gallon of each substance is not equivalent because the gas is less dense than water, so a gallon of water weighs more. When referring to volume, a gallon of gas is equivalent to a gallon of water. Even a gallon of oxygen is equivalent to a gallon of water, in reference to volume. However, when dealing with gases, pressure, temperature, and the number of molecules of the gas must be taken into account.

What is weight of Gasoline versus water?

Weight of Water Compared to Weight of GasolineAt a temperature of 20 oC or 68 oF, a (U.S.) gallon of pure water weighs about 8.34 pounds, whereas a gallon of vehicular gasoline weighs about 6.15 pounds at that temperature. Diesel weighs about 7.1 pounds per gallon.Though the question is appears to be about weight, it is actually about density, which is weight per unit volume. The SI-Unit of density is the kilogram per cubic metre, and expressed in those units, the densities are these:Water: 998 kg/m3Gasoline: 720 kg/m3Diesel: 830 kg/m3You see this when gasoline and water are put into a glass: because they are immiscible and the density of gasoline is lower, it will stay at the top. (Be careful when doing this as gasoline vapor is explosive and toxic!)In the bathyscaphe Trieste, a research submarine designed to go to the deepest point of the Pacific Ocean, the bathyscaphe was filled with gasoline, which was buoyant in the ocean water. It carried steel shot as ballast to make it sink, and the gasoline provided the "lift", similar to a balloon in the air.

How much does a gallon of gasoline vapor weigh?

Briefly, the saturated vapor volume of an average gallon of liquid gasoline when fully evaporated is 160.4 gallons of vapor at 60° F and sea level.Vapor volume of a liquid is the number of cubic feet of vapor resulting from the complete evaporation of the liquid. The vapor volume depends on parameters of density, temperature, pressure and molecular weight which is affected by the variety of formulas for gasoline that is comprised of a wide range of hydrocarbons.Several approaches are available to solve this problem. One is shown below.Using a common industrial formula:one liquid gallon = [(8.31) x (SG) x (387 cu ft)] / (MW)Where:8.31 = pounds in gallon of waterSG = specific gravity of liquid being vaporized387 = At standard conditions, one pound-molecular weight of a material will evaporate to fill 387 cubic feet of space.MW= molecular weight of liquid being vaporizedThen using the approximate gasoline constants:one liquid gallon of gasoline = [(8.31 pounds in a gallon of water) x (.70 approx. specific gravity of gasoline) x (387 cu ft)] / (105 molecular weight of average gasoline)= 21.4 cubic feet of vapor volumeThere is 7.481 U.S. gallons in one cubic foot. So:one liquid gallon of gasoline = (21.4 cubic feet) x (7.481)= 160.4 gallons of saturated gasoline vaporThe vapor volume will vary based on the specific formulation of gasoline, pressure, and temperature.D. How much does 55 gallons of gasoline weigh in pounds?

Let's do this. we know that 1 Gallon = 3785 ml we know that 1 ml of water = 1g (metric system is awesome) so 1 gallon of water = 3785 grams 1 lb = 453 grams 1 gallon of water = ( 3785 / 453 ) lbs about 8.35 lbs / gallon * 55 459.25

How much water does it take to make 1 gallon of gasoline?

This question can be answered in three ways. It takes 1851 gallons of water to refine a barrel of crude oil. One barrel of crude oil produces 19 gallons of gasoline and 10 gallons of diesel fuel, in this respect it takes 97 gallons of water to produce a gallon of gasoline. If you combine gasoline and diesel, it takes 63 gallons of water to produce a gallon of "fuel." A total of 42 gallons of petroleum products are produced from a barrel of crude oil, in this respect it takes 44 gallons of water to produce each gallon.

What makes gasoline heavier than water?

Gasoliner is NOT heavier than water. If you mix the two compounds , then allow them to settle. You will see that gasoline is on top of the water. ; Hence it is lighter (less heavy). Scieintifically, the density of gasoline is less than the density of water.

How much does 1 cubic foot of gasoline weigh?

It is not possible to answer the question without knowing the volume (quantity) of the gasoline. One gallon weighs from 5.8 to 6.5 pounds, depending on the temperature when you weigh it. Water holds similar weight properties as gasoline, so you may wish to test this by weighing one gallon of hot water and one gallon of cold water and taking the average. Don't measure, pour or heat gasoline!! Gasoline wegihs 6.08 pounds per gallon, diesel weighs an average of 7.1 pounds per gallon, water weighs 10.0 pounds per gallon. I Taransport gasoline daily and have been for the past 14 years.

What weighs more a gallon of gas or water?

A gallon of water is heavier (about 7 1/2 lbs per gallon) than gasoline (about 5.8 lbs per gallon). This is also the reason that gas floats on top of water.
