The cost of horse food depends on your breed of horse, and what sort of work you are doing with him. Obviously racehorses would eat much more energy-rich foods like oats and pellets. An average trail horse should be fed at least once a day with hay and/or chaff. For an extra treat you could add in pony pellets or carrots. The average price of a bale of hay in my area is $30-$35. Bags of chaff start at $3 a kilo, which is not alot, and bulk buying does save!!

That is a very small portion of the total annual cost of a horse. True, the hay for a small horse in the mid west can be as little as $400.00. But, you need to remember that the horse will need it's feet done every six weeks. Shots cost about $200.00 a year. Paddock maintenance (if you have your own farm).

Board runs about $300.00 a month at a lower end facility if you have no farm. Lessons can run $65 an hour.

I would guess the total cost of a horse is about $450.00 a month on average if boarded.
