A regular saddle horse that pulls the carriage on Sundays would go for around $25 to $100 depending on the age, looks, or if the horse had a pedigree. Most did not. Of course there were always more expensive horses. If you wanted to spend the money, you could buy a Thoroughbred or an Arabian.

In 1855, the average riding horse cost as much as $200. A workhorse could cost is much as $50. A good breeding horse could cost more than $200.

That depends, but in America I think the average was about $50 - $100. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Price also varied between riding, racing, and work horses.
