It depends on where you are talking about. Along the San Andreas fault, a major earthquake occurs about every 100 years. Earthquakes are caused by plates of Earth rubbing together.
As of now, it's been overdue. Scientist said that the earthquake has a 100% chance that will occur before 2037.
Though this is overdue, California has smaller ones almost daily and depending on the location and depth of the quake, some are felt and some are not.
On the lighter side...
California has been waiting for the "Big One for over 60 years or more. I heard about it every time and so did my grandparents did even sense they moved to the area after there would be anything of any significant size. At this point its just a matter of time and the news media just loves to play on that and freak people out.
You haven't specified what size earthquake. Sensitive seismographs
detect some sort of earth tremor there almost on a daily basis.
Once a day = a frequency of 0.00001157 Hz(rounded)
Fault lines. Fault lines are weak spots in the earth's crust that make them more susceptible to seismic activity. The weak spot is due to the fact that this is where two seperate tectonic plates meet
It is near fault lines such as the San Andreas fault. The faults are cracks in the earth that push against each other and cause earthquakes.
California has several faults, or underground cracks between tectonic plates of the Earth. When the plates shift and slide against each other, the Earth quakes.
because California is up to 2 earthplates,
that moving, that is by something a earthquake
because of its tectonic plate
Because California has a transform boundary which is a source of earthquakes.
Earthquakes happen when the Earth's crust shifts violently. So if we know that an earthquake has happened in California, then scientist know that the crust under California is unstable, therefore making earthquakes more likely to happen there. Earthquakes can happen anywhere, but the tend to happen repeatedly in certain spots
California.
Near any fault lines but earthquakes tend to happen more on the west coast. For example, in California there is a big fault line called the San Andres fault and it took down San Francisco in the early 1900's.
earthquakes mostly happen around plate boundaries!
because of its tectonic plate
California is situated on a large fault line that extends from north to south.
Because California has a transform boundary which is a source of earthquakes.
Yes, they happen in California ALL THE TIME
ya they do but it depends on where u r like California is where they happen the most in U.S
mostly California
Most earthquakes occur near plate boundaries.
yes, because California is at an active plate boundary.

The names come where the epicenter is located.
