One Answer:

While he lived in Chicago, he began attending the Trinity United Church of Christ regularly (although it should be noted that after he went into politics, there were a number of weeks when he did not attend) for about 17 years. The church's minister, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, encouraged Mr. Obama to recommit to Christianity. Rev. Wright performed Mr. Obama's wedding ceremony and baptized both of his and Michelle's children. But after Mr. Obama was involved in running for the presidency, Pastor Wright was made into a controversial figure by some of Mr. Obama's political opponents, as well as by some conservative talk show hosts. They began referring to Pastor Wright as a radical and taking some of his sermons out of context to make it seem as if he hated America.

But newspapers of that era do not report that Jeremiah Wright was a radical; in fact, he was regarded as outspoken but passionate about helping his community. He was also very vocal about what he perceived as lingering racism in society. Still, an endless stream of negative publicity and distorted or out-of-context videos led to a problem for Mr. Obama's campaign, and caused a rift between him and the man he credited with bringing him back to Christianity. The president left Rev. Wright's church, and by some accounts, today they do not speak to each other much, if at all. These days, the president and his wife occasionally attend services at Washington DC-area churches, and President Obama has had ministers of several denominations come to the White House to advise him.

Another answer:

The Chicago church attended by Barack Obama appears to have adjusted its Web site by relocating a section that outlined black ethics to be taught in homes, churches and schools.

The Web site for the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago had described its congregation as "unashamedly black and unapologetically Christian" but has made changes to the "About Us" section. The section no longer contains the "Black Value System." It has been replaced with videotaped testimonials by church members. The explanation of the Black Value System still exists on the church's Web site, but it has been moved from the "About Us" section to the bottom of the home page, where it says "Click here to read about the Black Value System." The Black Value System urges members to follow a list of 12 concepts such as a commitment to the black community, commitment to the black family and dedication to the pursuit of education and excellence.

The system also urges black families to be strong in order to "withstand warping by our racists competitive society," and says God will provide followers the strength to become "soldiers for black freedom and the dignity of all humankind."

Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. has retired as senior pastor of the church after 36 years there. Wright's sermons often refer to a "white America," and he has come under fire for his support of black separatist Louis Farrakhan. Barack Obama, who was a longtime member of the church, was forced to condemn inflammatory speeches made by Wright after some of his sermons were made public.

Like his predecessor President Bush, and like another famous president, Ronald Reagan, President Obama has not attended church frequently during his time in office. The reason, according to his spokespeople, is that any time a president attends a local church, it is a major distraction for the people who are just there to pray: there are secret service members who have to screen everyone, there are cameras, and the focus becomes people wanting to see the president rather than wanting to contemplate biblical truths.

Evidence shows that President Obama and his family have attended local church services at least four times. As for his predecessor, President Bush sometimes used the private chapel at Camp David, but he rarely attended local church services during his time in office. However, as several ministers have pointed out, not going to a church service is not a valid indicator of a person's faith; by most accounts, Presidents Bush and Reagan had strong beliefs, and whether they went to church or not, they undoubtedly prayed in private. The same has been reported about President Obama.

First, I think you mean the Reverend Wright (Jeremiah Wright). The future president attended his church off and on for about fifteen years, but more needs to be said about that. You have possibly heard negative things about Rev. Wright-- many of which are exaggerated and most of which were motivated by partisan (Republican) politics. Barack Obama was not yet involved with politics at the time he first began attending the reverend's Chicago church. He found the reverend to be a very motivational figure; in fact, President Obama has said it was Rev. Wright who guided him back to Christianity. Reverend Wright also performed Michelle and Barack Obama's wedding and baptized their daughters.

While outspoken about civil rights and seen as a community activist, the reverend was not a very controversial figure in Chicago, as a search through newspapers of that time will show. So, the fact that the president and his wife attended Rev. Wright's church off and on for about fifteen years was not a big news story... until Barack Obama was ready to run for president. At that time, certain Republican politicians and talk show hosts, as well as a conservative website with an agenda, took some of Reverend Wright's words out of context and began asserting he was a radical who hated America and had also radicalized the president. A closer look at Rev. Wright's sermons will show he was very opinionated, but no more radical than many preachers. And the assertion that he radicalized the president is false, and not supported by objective facts.
