How often do you water an orchid? In: Houseplants |
[Edit] |
After bringing many, many... I mean many orchids home from the greenhouse, I have discovered that watering is essential if you want your orchid to last, that is bloom completely.
One of the main reasons orchids die inside the house is because they are either over watered or not watered enough. Keep in mind, orchids are resilient so if you forget to water your orchid it may not harm the plant. However, if the orchid is blooming, it is important to keep a regular watering regimen as the blooms are "sweating" or emitting moisture that needs to be replenished with water. To do this I gather all the orchids in my house an bring them over to the kitchen sink where I have my water purifier. I will usually inspect the orchids for mealy bugs then remove any pests. Then I water the orchids in the sink allowing water to flow through the orchid media which is usually sphagnum moss or cedar bark. Allowing the water to run through the media will remove any gases or deposits detrimental to the orchid. Once all the orchids have been watered, I return them to their pots. I will usually say "You are so beautiful" which gives the orchid encouragement to stay beautiful. No I am not going crazy, talking to your plants is actually good for the plant and you too!
I hope these orchid watering tips help.
