How often should the cam belt be changed on a 1996 Vauxhall Astra Estate car with a GM 1.7 DTL Diesel Engin?

[Edit]

There are various recommendations from 60000-150000 km.
If you want to be on the safe side, use 60000 km limit.
Always check the belt visually after purchasing the car.
Take off the airfilterbox.
Take off the 6 mm bolts that hold the belt cover.
Start the engine and check how the belt moves on the
left side of the camsprocket. If there is any hopping movement,
change the belt, waterpump and tensioner immediately.
If the belt moves nicely, remember that the tensioner and
waterpump may last only 100000 km or less.
So the nice running of the belt does not guarantee that
the motor lasts long.
