Depend on your geographical location. Here in FL, and most warm southern states, 8 hours in the winter and 12 hours in the summer if you have standard 1.5" Plumbing. With 2" plumbing, and an extra large filter (60 sq ft D.E or 400 sq ft cartridge), you can reduce that by half. In northern states, the times will be less.

---- We run ours here in California for six to eight hours a day, depending on the season and our level of use. Here's a troubleshooting guide for Hayward pumps that applies to most pumps in general:

For your average size pool the filtration is usually run for about 6-8 hours per day However you can reduce this in the winter. the amount of time you need run the filter may also be controlled by the need to run the saltwater Chlorinator to generate enough chlorine for the pool. You are the best judge the important thing is that the pool is clean and looks good. so start at eight hours and reduce the time the filter is run until you notice its not keeping the water clean any more then increase it a little.

about three times a week 24 hours at a time :D

Another Answer: It is better to run for shorter times, several times a day. Reason one is that this will allow any leaves to be skimmed off before they sink to the bottom. Reason two is that more algae is killed with less chlorine if the water is constantly agitated. I personally run my pump 4 times a day for about 2-4 hours, but in your case it may be more or less depending on the size of your pool and the volume of water being pumped. You can experiment by reducing the times untill the water looses its sparkle then increase the time slightly to keep it sparkling.

Usually depends on the pool size, surrounding trees, and how good your filter/pump circulates.. But average is anywhere from 6-8 hours to be on the safe side!

How often do you need to run the filter system in a swimming pool?

This depends largely on how much use it gets or how much dust and impurity's are blown or dropped into the pool. if you have a salt water pool then you have to run it long enough to generate enough chlorine to keep the chlorine up. If it is an ordinary fresh water pool then usually some where between 6 and 8 hours per day on average.

Heaters are usually plumbed in after the filter. The pool filter/pump is what circulates the heated water. Ans: The heater will not work or fire if the pump is not running.

As much as possible. It should always be working to keep the pool clean. If you have small children, you can turn it off for a while for safety. Clean the filter on a regular basis. Turn off and empty in winter if it freezes in your area. Definitely worth researching pool care on internet search engines.
