If you factor in baselines of stories- some comic strips in plot or idea form are, hopefully you are sitting down) over a century old. Probably the oldest- still running and its creator would scarcely recognize it- is Little Orphan Annie- now called Annie. The concept was invented by the popular poet and writer James Whitcomb Riley around l902-06. He penned humor columns ( not strictly speaking comic strips) for the Official Guides to the railroads- and these served to lighten up the maps and timetables. Riley died certainly before WWl. Some other comic strips are also very old Katzenjammer Kids- a.ka. Max and Moritz was an old German comic strip that was Pre-War I. There were rocket boosters =always used in tandem, called Max and Moritz by Luftwaffe men in World WarII ( for that matter there was an anti-tank missile on the Allied Side called Mighy Mouse.). so it goes. among the animal Cartoons, probably the oldest still extant is the King Feature Syndicates: Felix the Cat who has made the full cycle of strip cartoon, movie cartoon ( with sound of course), television cartoon ( by accident the first one!) and is still in the Nine Lives span! he antedates both Mickey Mouse (l928) and Bugs Bunny ( l927) yes, they try to hide it, but Bugs is older than the Disney Mouse.,
