Any Cadet can be a member of a Unit Honor Guard, provided your unit allows any age cadet to be trained the Honor Guard Elements. Some units may encourage a higher level of maturity or strength for some of the elements, since a Civil Air Patrol Funeral can be difficult to handle for some younger cadets and the Rifles your unit uses should only be handled if you have enough strength and skill to use them. However, that does not stop a cadet from being trained in the Drug Demand Reduction Elements or Honor Guard principles.

Ask your local Unit Honor Guard Commander for details.

As for the CAP National Honor Guard Academy, the admittance age as of 2010 is 13 years old with only very few individual exceptions for 12 year olds. As a 3rd year outstanding graduate of the Honor Guard Academy I recommend you consider your own maturity level and physical ability before attending. If you cannot manipulate a 5-7lb drill rifle easily or hold a 7ft pole and flag at present arms (45 degree angle, extended from hip) for several minutes you may not be physically ready to handle the rigors of the Academy. The main academic curriculum can be handled by a focused 12 year old, but if you have trouble with drill I suggest you join a drill team or color guard, or even your own unit honor guard. Although the drills are totally different between drill team, color guard, and honor guard, the basic principles of precision and attention to detail remain.

The minimum age to join Civil Air Patrol's cadet program is 12. However, if you attend a Civil Air Patrol middle school, then you may join upon graduation of 5th grade. You may stay in the cadet program until your 21st birthday, or choose to become a senior member at age 18. Any prospective member already 18 must join the senior program. Senior members can be 18+ and are allowed to retire if desired after 12 years of service.

What is the difference between color guard and honor guard?

Depending on how far back you go, they are the same thing - color guard has its origins in the military, literally being there to guard the "colors" (aka the flag). Over time it evolved, and you have the modern color guard activity associated with marching bands and winterguards. However, as far as the military is concerned, it IS still called color guard - honor guard is a synonym, most likely used to avoid confusion. For example, at winterguard competitions, there is an honor guard to present the colors.
