An antique is considered at least 100 years old anything under a 100 is considered vintage

Vintage is considered to be items that are at least 20 years old. At this point, anything from the 80s and 70s would be considered to be vintage. It is antique when it is at least 50 years old, so at this point (2012) anything from 1962 and later.

My source would be that my grandparents and my mother were heavily into collecting vintage and antique items, my grandparents having over 60+ years experience in vintage and antiques dealing.

Technically vintage means something is at least 7 years old. Antique used to mean at least 100 years old, but now the distinction has blurred a bit and people use the term antique to refer to something 50-75 years old. To me, if it is over 30% of your life span, its vintage!

The rules have changed over the years and vary if different countries. It used to be Pre 1885, but later the 100 year rolling rule came in for Customs and Tax purposes. More latterly the term Antique is often applied to furniture from "a by-gone era".
