∙ 10y agoIt would depend on the maker of the engine. Most use Tecumseh and the last four digits of the model number string are the last digit of the year and the numeric day of the year. Example: 8243 is a year ending in 8 such as 1988, 1998, etc. and the 243rd day of the year.
On a Briggs it is still the last set of digits, but in the form of YYMMDDFS where the Ys are the last two digits of the year, the MM is the month, the DD is the day of the month and the FS is the factory and shift.
Kohler has a way also that is cover in their different manuals in the first section for the model in question. Their manuals are freely available online by model.

∙ 9y agoIf you can read the machine serial number, you can use on-line sources to determine the year, or contact Sears and provide the number. If the engine is a Briggs & Stratton, the first two digits are the year of engine manufacture, which should get you close.
