George Washington was an elected delegate to the First Continental Congress from the Virginia colony in 1774, when he was 42. A year later he was placed in command of the Continental Army as the Revolutionary War broke out.

He was 56 when he was elected President in 1788 (after the War), and 57 when he was sworn in as the first US President on April 30, 1789.
