How old was Isaac at the time he was to be sacrificed?

Note that Isaac wasn't actually sacrificed by Abraham. It was a test that God was using to see to what lengths Abraham would go to serve him.

The following observations are made on the website www.lavistachurchofchrist.org: "The Bible does not give a specific age, but there are events surrounding Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac which gives us clues. Most scholars believe that Isaac was in his late teen's or early twenties at the time of the offering. At the time that Isaac was conceived, we are told that Abraham was 99 years old, his wife Sarah was 90, and Ishmael was 13 (Genesis 17:1, 17, 25). Ishmael was sent out of Abraham's house at the time Isaac was weaned (Genesis 21). The age of weaning varies greatly between cultures but typically it would be between the ages of 2 and 5. The next given event is a covenant between Abraham and Abimelech, but no ages are given to tell us when this occurred. It was some time after this covenant that Isaac was offered. This noun is used to refer to a male from infancy to young adult not yet married. For example, Joseph is called a lad at the age of seventeen (Genesis 37:2) and at the age of thirty (Genesis 41:12, 46). We do have some further clues. Isaac is old enough to travel three days with Abraham but without his mother. His conversation with Abraham is that of an older child or a young adult. Finally, Isaac is the one who carried the wood for the sacrifice up the mountain (Genesis 22:6). The latter is strong evidence that Isaac was no longer a small child and serves as the main reason that our best guess is that he was at least in his late teens." First, he was never made a sacrifice... we know God stopped Abaraham before the knife came down. Second, to my surprise when I learned this last year, Isaac was between 36-38 years of age when this happened. We know this based on many scriptures that cross relate, but one being when they came back his mother Sarah had died. Since scripture tells us how old she was when Isaac was born, and how old when she died, it's pretty simple math.

A:According to the Bible, Isaac was 180 years old when he died. This is an amazing age, hard to really believe, and even harder to believe if we have evidence to the contrary - which we do have. If we look at the lifespans of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Bible says that:

1. Abraham lived to 175 (5 X 5 X 7)
2. Isaac lived to 180 (6 X 6 X 5)
3. Jacob lived to 147 (7 X 7 X 3)

• Each lifespan involves a perfect square (5, 6, then 7 in a numeric series),
• the third factor also forms a series (7, 5, 3)
• in each case the sum of the factors is 17.

This series is so well-contrived that we should accept that even if Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were real, historical people, they would not have lived to these great ages. We can not really say that Isaac lived to be 180 years old.
