On November 11, 1858, he married Lucretia "Crete" Rudolf, age 26, at the home of the bride's parents in Hiram, Ohio. Lucretia Rudolph's first American ancestors were an officer in the Frederick Wilhelm I court in Brandenburg who eloped with Wilhelm's half-niece & ward, Princess Anna. They escaped to France where they were married by a Huguenot minister, then went to England where they then sailed on a English ship, landing in Delaware(at the time a part of Pennsylvania) in 1719. The family name was spelled Rudulph, however, when decendents of the family moved to Ohio to live on Bounty lands rewarded in lieu of military pay not received during the Revolution War, they changed the spelling to Rudolph. Lucretia's family founded Western Reserve Eclectic Institute later called Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio & she met James Garfield when he came to teach at the college.
