He was 18 and right out of high school. Unfortunalty he was injured in his sophmore year at USC and lost his scholarship. Then his father Clyde died suddenly so there was no money for college. It was one of Wayne's biggest disappointments not to have finished college.

While a student at USC, playing on the football team, John Wayne worked at a movie studio prop department, getting the job in exchange for football tickets. What made John Wayne want to be in a movie?

Essentially, money - Wayne became injured while bodysurfing, and the injury was bad enough that he lost his football scholarship at USC. Without any source of income, and unable to continue at USC because he'd lost his scholarship, he was forced to look for work. He looked for work in the film industry, which at the time was one of the few places actually hiring. He got a summer job in the props department (courtesy of silent western star Tom Mix, who got him the job in exchange for USC football tickets) and from there he began to get bit parts in movies. It was there during those parts that he met Director John Ford (who gave him most of the parts) and from their friendship, he began acting on a more regular basis.
