David reigned in Israel 40 years. It goes on to summarize where that 40 years were spent; 7 in Hebron (near his hometown of Bethlehem. while on the run from Saul, and 33 years in Jerusalem, where He finally gained control of the monarchy.

When Saul died David became King of Israel and re-united all twelve tribes, reigning for about 40 years. He was succeeded by his son Solomon. I recommend reading 1&2 Samuel to get the whole story. :)
