John Henry Deutchendorf (John Denver) was 12 years old when his grandmother gave him a Gibson F-hole Jazz guitar to help him overcome his shyness. As a boy, John had sung in the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus (still in existence today) while living in Tucson, but still was a shy boy. His grandmother felt that perhaps playing the guitar would help him overcome this.
John Denver was killed on October 12, 1997 while piloting his new experimental plane over the waters of Monterrey Bay in California while going to BUZZ actor Clint Eastwood's house. Denver had just rented a house in Malibu, CA to be closer to his daughter Jesse, and Eastwood was his new next door neighbor.
John Denver was cremated along with that Gibson F-hole jazz guitar and his ashes were spread throught his beloved Rocky Mountains in Aspen and Starwood, Colorado.
According to the RIAA, John Denver is 4th in total all-time record sales of any artist with 130 Million records sold... behind Elvis Presley (1.4 Billion), Michael Jackson (750 Million), and Frank Sinatra (150 Million).
