Answer
Parashurama was a great devotee of lord shiva. Lord shiva presented him with a divine axe and taught him various martial arts. "Parasu" in sanskrit means "axe" and hence the name, "parasu rama".As he was in the lineage of sage Bhrigu he as also called "Bhargava".He achieved excellence in martial arts under the tutelage of lord Shiva and set out to destroy the kings or "kshatriyas" on the face of earth to avenge his father's death at their hands. The then kshatriyas and their armies were no match for him and they were systematically annihilated. He repeated this for 21 times encircling the eath every time and searching for any remaining kshatriyas. We can say that he single-handedly decimated the kings and their armies, with the help of his divine axe or, logically speaking, might have led an army of small but efficient warrior brahmins, proficient in martial arts. The purpose of this avatara of lord vishnu might be to cleanse the earth of these kshatriyas who violated dharma and commited atrocoius acts on the remaining population. parasuarama later donated all the land he acquired by defeating the kings to sage kashyapa and went to "mahendraGiri" to perform penance.
