How rare are one dollar coins?

Answer:

Any $1 coin dated 1971 or later is very common. Mintages range from hundreds of millions for some dates to well over a BILLION for others.

In particular the new gold-colored dollars that have been issued since 2000 are ordinary circulation coins and are unlikely to be worth more than face value for many decades. Feel free to spend any that you get in change.
