Extremely reliable in detecting the presence of alcohol. Rather less so in determining where the alcohol came from. However, with proper pre-exam observation, it's about 100% accurate in determining if you've been drinking.

I do not think this test is very accurate. I had been drinking pretty heavily all weekend, including a few beers on Sunday and was surprised with an ETG test on Monday. I found out about 9am that I would have to test at 4. I did a seasalt cleanse and drank a TON of liquids that day (not all water, b/c your test can't be clear either), ate quite a bit of protein and went to test at 4. Negative results. But I've also heard of many false positives.

Tests from a breathalyzer are actually considered to be very inaccurate. They can vary up to 15% from an actual blood alcohol level and have even found to give a false 23% reading of having excessive alcohol levels in a breath when in reality the person doesn't.

Yes. All other "tests" are really only estimates and are inaccurate to varying degrees.

What sort of blood test is a BAL?

BAL stands for "Blood alcohol content", so the most basic answer to this question is that it is a test that tests for the content of alcohol in your blood. The units in which it gives the result of this test is usually in percentage of the blood that is alcohol at the time of the test. The most common way of testing for the BAC of somebody is a breathalyzer, which is most often used by police who are testing to see if a driver is over the legal limit of BAC, which is .08 if you are over 21 in most states in the U.S.

How accurate was blood grouping or tissue typing in 1990 for paternal testing for who is the father?

Blood grouping and tissue typing has been around for 40 years or more so in 1990 it was as accurate as now. The thing is it tells you who cannot be the father, not who IS. If it is between two men and one CANNOT be the father it has to be the other one. DNA testing is more accurate especially if the two putative fathers are related.

How long does alcohol stay in your system once your dead?

Short answer: it stays longer than it would when a person is alive, but determining the amount and the source is difficult because of contamination and the fact that alcohol is a by-product of decomposition in most kinds of tissue. Accurate measurement of blood alcohol in cadavers is difficult, and gives widely varying results depending on cause of death, trauma, and other factors. If it is obtained from venous blood immediately after death, it is fairly accurate. In the case of cadavers, the preferred method is testing alcohol content of the vitreous humor (VH) in the eye. (Hey, you asked....) Although this seems to work well when gas chromatography analysis is used, a legally-accepted correlation between VH alcohol content and blood alcohol content v. time of death has yet to be established.

how does the court test for alcohol?

Assuming you mean Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) the court (or police department) has two main ways. The first is the breathalyzer test, which involves blowing into a tube while a computer analyzes the amount of alcohol on your breath. The second (and most accurate) method is through a blood test where the actual BAC is measured by using blood taken from your body.
