How reliable is the Toyota Prius?

I have had my 2008 for almost a year. It has 24K+ miles and so far so good.

We have a 2007, and have had no problems with it.

My wife and I each have a 2006 prius both bought new. I have 80k on mine, the wife has 56k on hers. I have had one major problem, the turn signal switch went bad on my prius, it flickered when not signalling a turn and wouldn't always blink when used to signal a turn. This happened right after the standard 36k bumper to bumper but the dealer took care of it anyway. The cost would have been just over $200 if I had to pay for it.

Other than that we have had no problems of real note. One minor frustration is the tail lights tend to go off / on on their own. Here in FL that's no big deal (cops can't be bothered). They are the push in type so I think it's just a connection issue and vibration causes intermittent outages. I do plan on taking all 4 out and spreading contacts on bulbs some day... We keep our headlights on all the time, miss our running lights on our previous GM cars so our problems may be worse than typical.


In the effort to trouble shoot the tail light issue, I checked the fuses. The fuses are tiny, when I last checked on it they could only be found at the dealer and require a needle nose pliers to remove/reinstall. I suggest you get a variety of sizes and keep them and the pliers where easily gotten to (I keep mine in the glove boxes).


All we have done for maintenance is oil and filter (air and oil) changes. Basically for normal use there is nothing but inspections recommended by Toyota (dealers of course suggest everything they can make money on) for the first 3 years / 100k miles.
