How should I start my first conversation with my father whom I haven't spoken to in 24 years?

Wow!  I hope this will be a great occasion for you.  I know it all sounds difficult to face, but I'm sure things will go well.  Nothing says you have to call him your father or "dad" (he has to earn that right), but treat him just like you would getting to know a friend and find out about each other and you may be surprised at just how much you have in common.  Give him a chance to explain things.  You are old enough to know that life has so many twists and turns in it and life is not simple at best.  People also make mistakes.  Give him a break, and get to know him.

Remember, if you're uncomfortable and don't feel like being in his company then be honest and leave.

Good luck!
