∙ 14y agoFor safety's sake you probably shouldn't as a general rule. A chemist smelling a compound will use a technique called wafting; this consists of waving the hand over the container in such a way as to gently push the vapor towards you while keeping the container itself well away from your face. It's basically the same as what a cook does to smell food without sticking his head right over the pot and getting a faceful of steam in the process.
