There are 2 types of fiber, multi-mode and mono-mode. As for what information can be sent that depends on equipment you connect: video, voice, multimedia, remote-control, data (computer network, etc). In most company / office networks you will find Multi-Mode as it is easier and cheaper to install and purchase the parts for. It is limited to about 600-2000 meters. The speed limit is based on the hardware connected to the fiber and the distance, but you can do 10 Gigabits across 300+ M. You only see Mono-Mode (Single-Mode) fiber in the Telecom industry. It is very expensive to purchase, difficult to connect, and the equipment that uses it is also expensive. It can go about 10-60-1000+ KM. I have added some links to look at.
