Who were the biblical giants?

33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.- Numbers 13:33 King James Version (KJV)

This statement has been taken as figurative, hyperbole, typical biblical exaggeration, or an actual description of the sons of Anak, in which case they must have been up to 10 meters tall [100 meters being 328 feet tall or approximately 300 feet or the length of the active playing area of an American football field sans the end zones; for another popular reference of 100 meters, the Statue of Liberty itself stands at 151 feet high from the base to the torch].

According to the biblical account found in the book of Genesis, these sons of Anak are the same giants (the Nephilim) that resulted when the "sons of God" mated with "the daughters of men in Genesis:

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown - Genesis 6:4 King James Version (KJV)Of course, these superhuman god-men should have been destroyed in the flood. So what were they doing still alive? Remembering that the fathers of the Nephilim are "sons of God", the ONLY sons of God are the angels and Adam: in contrast, we are all sons of Adam. The Nephilim are the result of some of the fallen angels ["sons of God"] mating with women ["the daughters of men"] , and as one parent of Nephilim was a [fallen] angel and the other human, it meant the Nephilim were 1/2-spirit and 1/2-flesh. When the Flood came the human part died, but the spirit-part didn't because spirits are eternal and so never die. When the Flood came it meant that there were a whole lot of 1/2-spirit beings wandering around looking for human bodies to occupy their other 1/2, and some of these were the sons of Anak.

Obviously when sons of Anak died or were killed their spirit-1/2 then had to find someone else to live in, or possess. This is known as demon-possession, and Jesus drove out many demons from people:

For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.comment: the above listed contributor paragraph is not "obvious" --- biblical accounts within the book of Matthew indicate that demons can also reside within animals and actually have a preference to reside within pigs:

28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.34And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts. - Matthew 8:28-34 King James Version (KJV)

The remains of modern-day nephilim (giant humans) have supposedly also been seen by many people, including "Buffalo Bill" Cody. In his book "AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF BUFFALO BILL (COLONEL W.F. CODY)"[1920, Cosmopolitan Book Corporation] Cody states:

CHAPTER VI

........ At Frenchman's Fork we discovered a village, but did not surprise it, for the Indians had seen us approaching and were in retreat as we reached their camping-place.

We chased them down-stream and through the sandhills, but they made better time than we did, and the pursuit was abandoned.

While we were in the sandhills, scouting the Niobrara country, the Pawnee Indians brought into camp some very large bones, one of which the surgeon of the expedition pronounced to be the thigh bone of a human being.The Indians said the bones were those of a race of people who long ago had lived in that country. They said these people were three times the size of a man of the present day, that they were so swift and strong that they could run by the side of a buffalo, and, taking the animal in one arm, could tear off a leg and eat it as they ran.

These giants, said the Indians, denied the existence of a Great Spirit. When they heard the thunder or saw the lightning, they laughed and declared that they were greater than either. This so displeased the Great Spirit that he caused a deluge. The water rose higher and higher till it drove these proud giants from the low grounds to the hills and thence to the mountains. At last even the mountaintops were submerged and the mammoth men were drowned.

After the flood subsided, the Great Spirit came to the conclusion that he had made men too large and powerful. He therefore corrected his mistake by creating a race of the size and strength of the men of the present day. This is the reason, the Indians told us, that the man of modern times is small and not like the giants of old. The story has been handed down among the Pawnees for generations, but what is its origin no man can say.

Additional Comment:

We do know that a son of Anak called Goliath of Gath, who was a one-man army, stood at 9 feet 9 inches, and would dwarf even the tallest of today's professional Basketball players.

They were the offspring that resulted from fallen angels that came down from their assigned estate in the heavens, down to earth and had sex with women of earth. Genesis 6:1-7,Jude vs.6, 2 Peter 2:4. This is strongly connected with the cause of Noah's flood that destroyed all life on earth. Notice the wickedness in mens hearts and God deciding to destroy man right after the verse on the "Sons of God 'which in the Old Testament is a name given only for angels. These giants were likely the cause of all the worlds cultures mythology stories, for example: the Greek gods, Hercules, Achilles etc. This coming to earth of these fallen angels was also connected with sharing of advanced knowledge, like the ability to build pyramids, predicting galactic star alignments and thereby coming up with the Mayan 2012 date that corresponds with it, etc etc. Civilization in Noah's day was possibly very advanced, given rise possibly to the Legend of Atlantis, which in truth was a description of the civilization of Noahs day, destroyed by the flood of waters.

The short answer is that we do not know with any precision. But as to their existence, the fact that giants are mentioned not only in Israelite traditions, but also by the Greeks, Romans, Celts, Hindus, Norse, Basques, Japanese and others, in our opinion warrants more than mere dismissal.See also the Related Link.
