The Election of 1852 turned out to be an indication of the future division of the US into what became known as "sectionalism." The issue of slavery in the campaign was muted because of the recently passed Compromise of 1850. The Democrats could not agree on any of the major candidates so settled on Franklin Pierce as a dark horse candidate. The Whigs were also split and nominated Winfield Scott. A portion of the Whigs who could not support Scott nominated John Hale as the candidate of the Freesoil Party. It opposed the spread of slavery into the territories. This election would also be the last for the Whigs who would split up over the issue of slavery in the territories.
!932 was a tuning point in the role of the federal government. Roosevelt wanted the government to control business to a degree never before attempted and to provide for the personal needs of people such as giving them a job, providing compensation to those unable or unwilling to work, paying pensions to the elderly , providing low-cost electricity and so forth. Politicians found that such programs were popular and that promising even more free lunches would help them get elected and keep them in office. Pork barrel riders in bills became the norm and winning the next election became more important to the politician than the long-term future life of the country.
Although the 1932 American presidential election was important, it was not a turning point in American politics. Franklin D Roosevelt was elected, and he inherited an economy shattered by the Great Depression. The traditional 'laissez faire' concept of letting the economy work it's way out of trouble were in effective after 1,500+ banks failed and unemployment neared 30%, so Roosevelt began a series of infrastructure-based jobs programs that built dams, railroads, and highways, while also regulating the banking system and Wall Street.

1932
In the 1932 general election Hitler's party won 22.5% of the vote in Berlin.
In the July 1932 Reichstag (Parliamentary) elections, the Nazi Party gained 230 seats, making them the largest party in Parliament. In the November 1932 Reichstag elections, the number of seats gained by the Nazi Party fell to 196. However, they still held the majority and were well ahead of their nearest rivals - the Social Democrats (who had 121 seats). Therefore, overall the Nazi Party became the strongest political party during the 1932 German elections. This was because, in times of political instability and economic hardship, the German public favoured the extreme solutions offered by Hitler and the Nazis.
