The idea that the plates moved was first came up with by Francis Bacon as he noticed that South America and Africa seemed to fit together like a 'jigsaw'. But, he was largely ignored at the time as he had no evidence. Alfred Wegener then provided the evidence using palyontology, geological similarities (bands fo rock) and similar fauna and flora on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. This has later been backed up with paleomagnetism, further geological similarities and finding the same animal fossils in areas of the world they cannot have lived in.
