This is information about renewing a US Passport by mail. The procedure will be different for renewing it in person or if you are from a different country. There is information at the related link for US citizens. A US post-office is an excellent place to do this.

You can renew by mail if:

  • Already have a passport that is not damaged; and
  • Received it within the past 15 years; and
  • Were at least age 16 when it was issued; and
  • Still have the same name as in passport (or you can legally document your name change).
(If any of these do not apply to you, you must apply in person.)

Here are the steps

  1. Fill Out Form DS-82Submit your Most Recent U.S. Passport
  2. Include Name Change Documents (if applicable) . You must provide a certified copy of the legal name change document.
  3. Provide a Photo
  4. Calculate Fees
  5. Mail Completed Application

For more details on the U.S. Passport process, please check out the United States State Department website: travel.state.gov

You can go to the postoffice and get the forms or to your county government center. You will need to get two new passport photos and take the completed forms back to the Post Office, government center, or mail them. It will cost you about 75.00 to renew and you will have to have the old passport as well. They want the old one, but I think you can request to have it back. I know with mine there are stamps from countries I have been to that I want to keep. You should get your new passport in about 6 weeks.

If you're an American, you have options for renewing your passport:

  1. If the passport has an issue date less than 15 years ago, and you were at least 16 years old when it was issued, then good news, you don't need an appointment. You can do the mail-in form DS-82. Your name will have to be exactly the same as it was on the old passport, unless you have a court order or a marriage certificate showing a change, and you will need to send in that document along with the completed, signed DS-82 (including a new photograph), the old passport, and a check for the services you desire.
  2. In all other cases that do not fit the DS-82 requirement above, or if you just don't want to do a DS-82, you do a DS-11 again (it's the same form you did to get your first passport). You can find a listing of acceptance facilities at the State Department's website; bring the completed (but not signed) DS-11, a new photograph, your old passport, and the check for the services you want to that facility.
  3. If it's an emergency and you need a new passport immediately (for example, you need to go to Europe tomorrow to visit your grandmother who's about to die), then you need to make an appointment with your nearest Passport Agency. You will still need to do one of the two forms mentioned above, and you will be required to pay for expedited service, as well as providing proof of the emergency travel.
Instructions for all of the above can be found at the State Department's travel website, "travel.state.gov". This includes a directory of acceptance facilities- to make an appointment, you must call the facility directly and arrange it with them. Some facilities do not require appointments. Lastly, the website includes instructions for how to make an appointment with a Passport Agency.

If you're not American, then the above does not apply, and you would need to contact your country's passport issuance agency.
